Register for my social media engagement webinar!

I attribute most of what I have learned about community engagement and social media to my days writing this blog and engaging with the blogosphere, so I wanted to let you know that I am doing my very first webinar! It's all about building key relationships online and converting those into signups, sales, donations -- whatever you want to do! I am a freelance communications professional, so I am very passionate about this.

Join me! Registration is just $10 Canadian and it comes with a FREE social media engagement consult with me. It's tomorrow, April 26 at 8 pm EST and I would love to have you. Please spread the word!

Thanks, blogosphere, for everything you've done for me. 😌

Bob Rae Didn't Invent "Eskimos" Criticism

People see Bob Rae speaking out against indigenous team names and assume it's a PC NDP white guy initiative when actually there is huge activism against it from indigenous people themselves. See #NotYourMascot.

Rejecting or ignoring indigenous voices and blocking them from not only the head of the table on their own representation, but a seat at the table period is an extension of the dehumanization inherent in branding a team after a race of people.

Even Adele gets a cold. Loving her heartfelt personal message.

Adele has a cold and had to cancel a show. She made this Facebook video to apologize to her fans and explain her situation. I love this. No matter who you are and even if it's just a cold, health has to come first.

It's such an important issue for our society, where many people can't afford to take time off or get major grief about it. How can anyone perform optimally with a cold? Not to mention all the people you can infect... It's beautiful to see her open up here! No make up and a heartfelt message direct from the artist herself. This takes GUTS. I love the humanity here and this is such a beautiful gesture for her fans. Lovely comments, too. Disappointment with love, understanding and well wishes. All of this can help Adele's career -- great social media move on her part -- and it also fosters understanding and compassion for colds in general. They suck!

Get well soon, Adele!

Arcade Fire's Funeral still warms my heart

Alejandro Dagnino | Floral Arrangement for a Funeral
Ah, Arcade Fire's Funeral is still one of my very favourite albums. My introduction to it was hearing the first single "Rebellion (Lies)" on the radio and seeing the video on Much Music (Canadian music channel).

I had either just completed my first year of university or was nearing the end and immersing myself in this beautiful album was my celebration of sorts. Listening to it made me feel so joyful and there was something about the sound and the lyrics that nourished the kid in me. Still does.

Right to a Healthy Environment: An Ecojustice Case

Did you know that the Right to a Healthy Environment (RHE) is not a part of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms? Learning this surprised and angered me. 53% of Canadians polled thought that this right was included and most Canadians feel that we should have this right.

I read this in an Ecojustice pamphlet earlier this week at an event the charity held about environmental rights and the injustices faced by the residents of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation. I couldn't get this hole in the Charter out of my head.

Ecojustice is Canada's only national charity that uses the law to defend our environment. Margot Venton, a staff lawyer for their vital work, explained that when countries recognize the Right to a Healthy Environment in the law, standards improve. Among her international examples was France. The country has banned fracking as well as the use of pesticides in public places, with some purposeful exceptions.
